I have been painting again this week – one of my sons highland cows with her calf.

I have completed the underpainting and am now adding the highlights and detail to the mountains.

The bush is established by adding white, then naples yellow and lastly yellow ochre to the background colour

and building the bush into ridges and valleys. This is the fun part because now I can imagine I am actually there.

I have sketched and gone over the canvas with my usual Alizarin crimson wash establishing distance and composition.

Now the background colours are added forming an under painting of darks.

You can only get light into the painting by making it dark first.

Lastly I add the foreground and finishing touches to the water.

Now the real work begins, putting in the bush detail.

I use the base colour and add naples yellow, yellow ochre and sap green progressivly as I move towards the foreground of the painting. Beginning at the most distant point I follow down ridges and in doing so form valleys.

I have taken this photo under lights so the colours are not true.
