About Barbara Smith
Barbara Smith paints in oils and enjoys the challenge of capturing the vivid colour and light of the southern landscapes of New Zealand.
Her landscape oil paintings depict unique scenes of the south island which include Milford Sound, Fiordland, Queenstown, Central Otago, Lake Hayes, mountains, rivers and lakes.
For Barbara a special interest in oil painting began at an early age through watching her grandmother paint the landscapes of Central Otago. Maribel Chalmers taught her techniques of painting in oils and passed on her own enthusiasm and love of her surroundings. It was not until 1986 that Barbara began painting and in 1994 held her first solo exhibition of 20 paintings in Invercargill. Two years later a second followed with 40 works on display. Since then her work has been exhibited in many places and hangs in homes throughout New Zealand and overseas
After 25 years of painting, Fiordland and Central Otago are still favourite subjects with the ongoing challenge to capture the beauty of these wonderful landscapes.
